Billing and invoices

How often we invoice, creating an invoice, and putting a client on hold.

Updated Billing

Billing turns work that has been done into an invoice. Most of it is automatic; the parts that are not are the ones worth understanding.

How often we invoice

Each client has How often we invoice, set on the client and from the top of Billing. Orin uses it to decide when an invoice is due, and Runs on tells you the next date.

A client can be put On hold from How often we invoice. It stops being billed automatically and stays that way until somebody takes it off hold, which is deliberate: a hold is a decision, not a timeout.

Creating one by hand

Create an invoice lets you invoice outside the schedule. Orin drafts it from the fixed-fee work ready to invoice, grouped by task, and you adjust before issuing.

Money received in advance

A payment that arrives before its invoice is held on the client as money received in advance. It waits there until you apply it to an invoice.

Common questions

A draft invoice counts as billed. Is that right? Yes, and it is deliberate. The invoice run uses that rule when it works out what is left to charge, so drafting an invoice takes that work out of the unbilled pile rather than leaving it to be invoiced twice.

Part billed? A fixed fee invoiced below the task's completion.
